Clonakilty based Fine Gael TD Jim Daly is to be promoted to a Junior Ministerial position. The title of the post will be
‘Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People’ and it will be attached to the Department of Health. The position of Minister of State for Mental Health was previously held by Meath East TD Helen McEntee.
In recent months Deputy Jim Daly had supported Dublin’s Leo Varadkar – instead of Cork’s Simon Coveney – in the internal Fine Gael party leadership contest. Leo Varadkar ultimately won, and is now Taoiseach with the power to select his cabinet, and Junior positions.
The last time constituency of Cork South West was represented at cabinet was in 2004. Long time Fianna Fail TD Joe Walsh (RIP) retired that year as Minister for Agriculture.
