The annual Lions Club Holiday for Senior Citizens is taking place in the Trabolgan Holiday Village, Whitegate, Midleton, Co Cork from the 9th – 16th June. This is the largest service project undertaken by any Lions Club in Europe with more than 600 senior citizens and and some 150 helpers on site for the week.
Each year the Order of Malta Ambulance Corps provides 24/7 medical cover for the week under the direction of Dr Richard Harrison. Last year members from Order of Malta Units from Kilkenny, Thurles, Cashel, Clonmel, Cork, Carrigaline and Youghal, all worked together to assist with the various duties that were needed of them. Last year the team put in well over 1400 man hors during the week. In addition medical assistance to over 50 guests with 6 guests were transferred to Cork University Hospital, 3 to South Doc. Also 380 guests were screened for Diabetes.
Co-ordinating the Order of Malta volunteers from across the South West is Maureen O’Brien. Maureen has has duty managed the event over the last couple of years. On top of the first Aid duties provided throughout the week volunteers also give support to the guests who need a chat or help getting ready for the numerous events that take place during the week. A spokesman said “No matter how busy and demanding the week is all the guests and members of the Ambulance Corps truly enjoy the week and look forward to meeting up again this year.”
