Speaking following yesterdays Supreme Court ruling that a ban on asylum seekers from working is unconstitutional, Sinn Féin TD and Justice spokesperson Jonathan said that the ruling was an important step forward for asylum seekers in Ireland.
Deputy O’Brien said;
“Sinn Fein have consistently called for an end to direct provision and changes to the law to allow asylum seekers to work.
“There is now an onus on the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald to use the time afforded by the court in order to address this ruling and ensure that asylum seekers are given the right to work.
“The Minister could easily bring forward emergency legislation to do this.
“If the Minister does not do this promptly, we in Sinn Fein intend to bring forward our own Bill on the matter.”
