Cork City WFC’s winning streak came to an end at the hands of Shelbourne LFC as they lost out 2-4 in the Continental Tyres Women’s National League on Saturday in Bishopstown.
City had gotten off to a dream start as on the fifth minute good work on the left from Danielle Burke and Stacey Paul got the ball to Clare Shine who set it up for Saoirse Noonan to apply the finish from close range and make it 1-0 to the Leesiders.
City came close to a second five minutes later as good work from Saoirse Noonan set up Stacey Paul but her effort couldn’t beat Amanda McQuillan. Shelbourne equalised on the 16th minute as a swift counter attack set Niamh Prior free and she beat Amanda Budden to make it 1-1.
That goal gave life to Shelbourne and they began to dominate possession, putting City on the back foot and keeping the City defence busy. Shelbourne’s pressure told as on the 25th minute a Tiegan Ruddy free kick into the City box found the head of Roma McLoughlan who put a powerful header in to beat Amanda Budden to make it 2-1.
Shelbourne quickly made it 3-1 on the 27th minute thanks to a free kick on the edge of the box converted by Tiegan Ruddy. They almost scored again on the 37th minute when Kate Mooney got a header on goal but her effort went wide of the goal.
City came into the second half hoping to get back into the game but all hope of that seemed to end on the 54th minute when Jamie Finn scored after a Shelbourne free kick. City brought on Ciara Desmond for Nathalie O’Brien in the 60th minute and Megan Kelleher for Stacey Paul in the 65th minute.
There were few chances for the rest of the game with City trying to create chances but having little joy getting through a stubborn Shelbourne defence. They gave themselves some hope late on when Katie McCarthy getting on the end of a Clare Shine through ball managed to get it home but it proved nothing more than a consolation goal as City were unable to create any further chances of real note.
Cork City WFC’s next game is a trip to The Watershed to face Kilkenny United WFC in the Continental Tyres Women’s League Cup Competition next Sunday May 28th with a 2pm kick off.
