This afternoon the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Des Cahill (Fine Gael) and members of Cork City Council will bestow the Freedom of the City of Cork on Rugby legend Ronan O’Gara.
The custom of awarding the Freedom of the City of Cork dates from the 14th Century. The conferring of the Freedom of the City of Cork is the highest Civic Honour which can be bestowed by Cork City Council upon a person who has distinguished themselves and is deemed worthy to have their name enrolled on the List of the Freemen of the City.
Due to space limitations the Freedom ceremony at 3pm is open to invited guests only. The ceremony will – however – be steamed live and free on www.corkcity.ie/tv
This follows a vote at Monday’s City Council meeting, and the highly successful live stream of last year.
