Cllr. Kenneth O’ Flynn (Fianna Fail) has today called on the Minister for Agriculture, Simon Coveney to follow the French governments lead in banning supermarkets from throwing away or destroying unsold food and instead donating them to charities or allowing them to be turned into animal food or compost.
Cllr. O’ Flynn said “in this day and age it is regretful that this issue needs to be highlighted, but this is vital and could play an integral role in helping people to get people back on their feet again. We have already seen the huge success of the SVDP food bank but there are many families out there who, although they cannot afford enough food, are not in receipt of this help”.
An avid food writer himself for “Hi Magazine”, “Gourmet Ireland” and “Cork Business Magazine”, Cllr. O’ Flynn has always championed food waste and ensures to promote food conservation in his writings and blogs.
