The annual series of concerts for primary and post primary schools Song and Dance – A Celebration! presented by Evelyn Grant (RTÉ lyric fm) and the Cork Pops Orchestra will take place on Friday March 4th at 10.15 am and 12 noon in University of Limerick Concert Hall and Tuesday March 8th in City Hall, Cork at 10am and 12 noon.
Evelyn will raise her ‘magic wand’ and bring her audience on a musical journey through the ages, ably abetted by her ‘Genie’ Keith Hanley (Voice of Ireland winner 2013) DJ Dashka and the irrepressible ‘cello playing gorilla, who has been released into Evelyn’s care in this, the year of the monkey!
This year’s selection of melodies and dances covers a wide range of music, from the classical ballet of Tchaikovsky to the current hit Cheerleader; with famous anthems from Handel’s Zadok the Priest to Les Misérables and West Side Story. Dance music producer, DJ Dashka will join forces with vocalist Keith Hanley for some contemporary surprises.
The programme is curriculum-based, and makes connections between music of the past and present. The concert focuses on active and attentive listening, encourages audience participation, and is a multi-media experience. Classroom resources are provided to participating schools. Further internet links can be found on the orchestra’s website www.corkpops.ie
Experiencing live music through active listening makes an impact on a child that lasts a lifetime. Evelyn Grant’s unique skill in communicating the joy of music past and present is at the heart of the success of Cork Pops Orchestra concerts.
