Johnny O’Mahony, the Green Party candidate in Cork South West, swims in the sea every day that he can. Next Friday will be no exception. Johnny plans to make a splash when he launches his General Election campaign at Lough Ine, next Friday 5th February at 12:00pm midday.
To mark the launch Johnny will take his daily swim in Lough Ine, a protected area of natural beauty and cleanliness in West Cork.
“I want to draw peoples’ attention to the beautiful amenities they have at their doorstep. These are threatened by the predicted rise in seawater levels and flooding, if our current rates of carbon usage are not reduced.”
“I am standing because of my concern for our environment and the urgent need to address the challenges of climate change that face the planet in the years to come.”
“Flooding and increased rainfall threaten the viability of our agriculture and tourism industries. Increasing sea temperature will have detrimental effects on the fishing industry.”
For the sake of our children, our grandchildren and the future of the planet, Johnny feels that it is important that someone put forward these issues before the electorate to offer the voters in Cork South West an opportunity to express their concern.
