West Cork based Labour T.D. Michael McCarthy has welcomed news that progress has been made to resolve water supply issues in Belgooly.
Residents in the area have had to endure problems with the water supply for many years
Speaking to TheCork.ie the Labour TD said “I have campaigned for sometime now alongside local residents to have the village connected to the mains supply in Riverstick – as planned in 2009, before the scheme was put on hold because of the economic downturn.”
Irish Water have confirmed to that significant progress has been made to progress the scheme. The substantial watermain contract (3,694m) was issued to market in 2015. Tender evaluation and clarifications took longer than expected but are now complete and an award letter will issue to the successful tenderer this week. It is expected that the contract signing will take place in the next two weeks. Based on a commencement date in February the main should be in place and operational by August 2016.
