The Mayor of Clonakilty Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin has issued an open invitation to all Clonakilty people and visitors to the town to a community ringing in of the New Year at the town-centre Asna Square tonight (Thursday 31st).
People are asked to assemble from 11.45pm at Asna Square itself with handheld bells if they have them, where the New Year will be rung in at 12.00 midnight. He is also delighted to announce that a laser-projected Countdown Clock will be beamed onto one of the walls in the square which will lead people in the countdown to the first moments of 2016.
Musicians who wish to bring along their instruments to play on the night are welcome to do so to add to the atmosphere (no amplification!).
The ceremony will be brief and simple and will be concluded by 12.05 so that people may return to other new year events if they wish.
The Mayor Cionnaith Ó Súilleabháin said,
“Over the last few years, the people of Clonakilty have welcomed in the new years in this lovely community event. It is always a nice occasion for families, people alone on the night and emigrants home for Christmas, who meet up for 15-20 minutes to ring in the new year together. It is simple and short but also important to do. As Mayor, I extend a Céad Míle Fáilte to all to come along, bring a bell to ring and enjoy the event. We also welcome any musicians on the night who wish to provide entertainment. The countdown clock projected onto a wall in the square will add to the event this year. The event will be weather dependent, but if the forecast is right, then this event will definitely go ahead.”
