John Kavanagh has signed a new contract with the club.
The full-back underwent surgery recently after missing the second half of the season through injury, and he told CorkCityFC.ie that his recovery was going well: “I had my operation over seven weeks ago and things are going well. I’m working hard with the physios in the Mardyke Arena Clinic; everything is going well, I am ahead of schedule and I just want to get back as quickly as possible.”
“The main thing for me is to just get fit. It was disappointing last season, I missed some big games like the Europa League and the cup final. I’m 21 now, it’s probably time for me to push on a small bit. The injury was a setback but, once I have that sorted, I can get going again.
“Everything is very positive, there are some very good signings and hopefully they can push us on. You can see, over the last few years, that the club is going in the right direction and I’m very happy to be part of that for another year. Hopefully, this year, we can go on and win some silverware. A trophy is the only thing missing in the last two years, everything else is there.”
City boss John Caulfield said that the priority for the defender is to get back to full fitness: “John had a horrendous couple of months last year after getting injured and he had an operation towards the end of the season. He has a five-month recovery plan and, thankfully, he is off the crutches. He is doing really well and we hope he will be back sometime during pre-season.”
“I’ve had a few chats with him, he is working really hard at the moment and he has his head down to get back as soon as possible. It (signing a new contract) has given him a focus to get back as soon as possible and get his career back on track.”
“He came through the underage set-up, he has a fantastic attitude and he’s quite experienced for his age. He has a lot of leadership qualities and he has proved he can play at this level”
