The Social Democrats today have confirmed that well known Cobh political expert Ken Curtin will be their candidate in Cork East for the forthcoming general election. Ken is a married father of two girls. He lives in Cobh and plays an active role in the local community through several organisations including Tidy Towns and Cobh People’s Regatta. He is an experienced campaigner at local and national level, the latest example of this being the key leadership role he played for Yes Equality Cork in the Marriage Equality Referendum.
Ken has been involved in politics all his life but this is his first time putting himself forward in a General Election. He believes as we approach the centenary of 1916 our country is at a crossroads, we have a choice between opting for a continuation of more of the same or a new type of politics based on a vision of open government and the type of public services we as a people so badly need. He believes Social Democrats under the leadership of Stephen Donnelly, Catherine Murphy and Róisín Shortall can deliver on that vision while maintaining a strong pro enterprise economy.
Speaking at the confirmation of his candidacy Ken Curtin said “I’m delighted with the confidence the leadership of Social Democrats have shown in me when asking me to be their candidate. It is an honour and a privilege to be involved with this party in its infancy as its core values so much mirror my own.” He further added “with the help of an enthusiastic group of volunteers I will be engaging in an intensive campaign from Cobh to Conna and from Midleton to Mitchelstown to ensure the largest possible Social Democrats vote here in Cork East”
