The market for Gluten Free products is growing.
An estimated 45,000Irish people are now coeliac: meaning they must avoid wheat in the diet. Symptoms of gluten intolerance include fatigue, and weight loss. To cater for the increasing market many companies have been introducing gluten-free foods. Today in West Cork: Scally’s SuperValu in Clonakilty opened Ireland’s first in-store gluten-free bakery.
Separately, in Cork City a company that produces gluten-free snacks is reporting increasing sales. Veronicas Snacks is based on College Road and makes gluten-free crisps in a factory outside of Ireland. Founder Veronica Keneally says the market for coeliac friendly food is increasing rapidly which is creating opportunities for Cork companies.
