A Mahon based City Councillor says the time has come for a total ban
on bonfires in Cork City, even at the City Council run events.
In previous years the City Council tried to discourage the lighting of
fires by referring to the day as “Saint Johns Eve” to downplay the
fire element
This year Council workers were out trying to collect discarded rubbish
which could be used as fuel.
Also this year five supervised community events were run to discourage
the lighting of private fires.
But still Bonfire night remains a problem with green areas scorched,
the risk of injury, a high clean-up bill, and the Fire Service coming
under attack
Sinn Fein Cllr Chris O’Leary lives in Mahon and says a total ban on
fires is now needed even at the City Council organised events in
Mayfield, Knocknaheeny, Mahon, Togher, and Farranree
