Almost half of all private rented accommodation inspected in Cork City
over the last three years failed to meet basic housing standards.
Private Landlords have a legal obligation to look after their properties,
but responsibility for enforcement rests with local authorities.
It emerged this week that inspectors from Cork City Council have
recorded more than 1-thousand breaches of regulation since 2010,
however the Council has
not taken a single landlord to Court.
The most common problems noted were no smoke alarms, and inadequate
ventilation which leads to dampness.
