South Main Street in Cork will not be renamed as Beamish & Crawford Street.
There was a proposal within Cork City Council for a name change for
the purposes of Tourism and promoting any re-development of the old brewery
site, but the idea
has been shot down.
Independent Cllr Kieran McCarthy is also a Historian and has written a
number of books about the City.
He points to the recent example of renaming Faulkers Lane to Opera Lane,
and says while there can be branding advantages in the short term,
overall a little bit of history is lost whenever names change.
