The Vhi Medical Centre, Cork, was awarded the prestigious “General
Healthcare Centre of the Year 2013” at the 2013 Irish Healthcare
Centre Awards recently. The awards recognise excellence and best
practice in Ireland’s National and Community Healthcare Sector.
The Vhi Medical Centre, which opened in CityGate Mahon in 2010,
provides screening services for Vhi Healthcare customers based on the
latest medical evidence in a comfortable, safe and high quality
facility. It is the only dedicated screening facility run by an
insurer in the Cork region. To date, over 12,000 screening
appointments have been carried out at the Cork centre. The results
were astounding with over 12% of those screened found to have diabetes
or pre-diabetes, 65% diagnosed with high cholesterol and over 64% were
deemed to be overweight or obese.
Commenting on the Award, Dr Bernadette Carr, Medical Director, Vhi
Healthcare said “We are delighted and proud to have received this
award. It is a huge endorsement of the effort and contribution of
everyone working at the centre who plays a role in promoting healthier
lifestyles. By screening customers and identifying individuals at high
risk or with pre-diabetes, we have the opportunity to help manage the
rapidly rising tide of diabetes and play a role in reducing future
healthcare spend”.
In 2013, the diabetes programme is involved in a re-screening cycle
with customers who previously attended a screening appointment which
will allow customers to review their results and assess how any
lifestyle alternation have impacted on health outcomes. The range of
screening packages available at the centre is also expanding.
Vhi Healthcare as the largest health insurance company in Ireland is
committed to helping its customers live longer healthier lives and as
part of its Wellness Strategy, has taken a leadership role in helping
customers identify health issues and to proactively support them in
the management of their own health.
