The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport wants to merge the
Bantry Bay Harbour Authority with the Port of Cork Company, which is
based in the City and it’s
seeking submissions.
Government policy is to merge harbours with significant commercial
traffic with a port company,
, and to transfer smaller harbours to County Councils.
To date 11 harbours have transferred to local authority control.
The core business of Bantry Bay Harbour is oil storage and
transhipment on Whiddy Island.
Fishing and tourism also feature.
The Department of Transport says if the Port of Cork Company takes
over Bantry Bay then there
will still be an opportunity for local representation.
The Department is seeking views on the proposals by April 5th.

Submissions can be sent by email to maritimetransport@dttas.ie or by post to
