The suburb of Blackrock Village is to get a 1.5 million euro facelift. An area which is currently a car park will become a paved plaza, with steps leading to the harbour.
The main road which passes the Bakery and Scout Hall will be removed and become part of the plaza, which will have new street lamps, trees and benches facing the water.
Meanwhile, across the road the garden wall of the old Ursuline convent will be demolished to open up a large green area, and playground, and part of the Convent road will be widened for traffic.
Fine Gael Cllr Des Cahill says the project was previously delayed because of legal issues, but work should begin before the end of the year.
