Gurranabraher Credit Union celebrates its 50th anniversary this year and to celebrate this anniversary the credit union have unveiled a series of events and developments over the next 12 months. Gurranabraher Credit Union, which was founded in 1963, has been providing top quality financial services to its 16,000 member in the northside of Cork city for the last 50 years and is continuing to grow and expand with offices on Bakers Road and on Harbour View Road in Knocknaheeny and has total assets of €84m, processes 500,000 transactions a year, employs 21 staff, and has significant electronic capabilities. “This is an important year for Gurranabraher Credit Union as we celebrate our 50th anniversary. Gurranabraher Credit Union has, whilst maintaining its core ethos and community basis, developed and progressed to be a key provider of quality financial services in the north side,” Denis Sheehan, Chairman of Gurranabraher Credit Union, said. “We aim to use our 50th anniversary year to highlight to the people of the north side the range and quality of services we offer.” Events and developments announced include: § A free monster bingo evening, to be held in the Gurranabraher Parochial Hall on the 20th April 2013; § A darts competitions, a soccer competition, and an indoor bowls competition to be held over the summer months; § A function to honour the 50 longest serving members; § A special mass to be held on the 19 May 2013 in the Church of the Ascension, followed by a Board meeting in the basement of the church where the Credit Union was originally set up and operated from. Other developments being announced as part of the 50th anniversary include an enhanced sponsorship program for the year, which will aim to give €50k to local clubs, societies and groups throughout the year, and the launch of new products to coincide with the anniversary. The 50th anniversary sponsorship programme is already well under way, with €26,000 in sponsorship already granted to 40 different entities. The first of the new products being announced is a small business loan, which will aim to provide support and credit to small local businesses in the Credit Unions area. This new product is being launched in Gurranabraher Credit Union on Tuesday February 12 2013, when a small business seminar is being held. The first meeting to set up the Credit Union took place on the 28 April 1963, and Gurranabraher Credit Union was officially admitted to membership of the Irish League of Credit Unions on the 08 December 1963.
