Fianna Fáil Leader Micheál Martin has said Ireland is extremely proud of Katie Taylor’s Olympic Gold Medal win in London, describing her as “a once in a generation athlete who has achieved her Olympic destiny.”
Deputy Martin said: “The whole country can be extremely proud of Katie Taylor’s achievement today. Her Olympic Gold medal win is a demonstration of the commitment and discipline Katie has shown to boxing. If it were not for her extraordinary talent and professionalism female boxing would not have been included in the 2012 Games.
“Katie is a fantastic role model and her win today will inspire a new generation of boxers and athletes across the country. I want to congratulate not only Katie but also her family, friends and supporters who have made this journey with her. The whole country is extremely proud of her achievement.
“I also want to pay tribute to the IAB who have transformed amateur boxing in Ireland and together with the Olympic Council of Ireland have shown great support to all of the athletes representing the country in London and wish all remaining Irish competitors the very best for the Games.”
