Cork South Central Fáil TD Michael McGrath has welcomed the sale of the Pfizer manufacturing facility at Shanbally, Cork to BioMarin but has again expressed his regret that there will be 65 job losses later in the year as the plant closes.
Deputy McGrath commented: “Today’s announcement that the sale has been completed of the Pfizer plant in Shanbally to BioMarin is very welcome as new investment is planned on the site and over 100 high quality jobs will be created in the coming years.”
“However I am conscious of the fact that there will be 65 jobs losses in September when the Pfizer plant closes. I will be raising with the government the need for the State agencies to work closely with management at the plant and staff to source alternative employment or training opportunities where necessary.”
“I also welcome confirmation today that efforts are continuing regarding the sale of the Pfizer plant at Loughbeg and I hope a buyer with strong investment plans will be in a position to take it over.
“I think it is important to point out that the news today will secure further vital investment in the community and the strong pharma sector in Cork. I welcome that the investment from BioMarin, a California headquartered company, is being supported by the IDA,” concluded Deputy McGrath.
