Brookville Estate in Glanmire, Co Cork is to be the first to have “salt boxes” piloted in their Estate for the coming winter freeze.
The severe weather action committee decided to embrace the the motion first placed on a council agenda by Fine Gael County Cllr Gerry Kelly last winter.
“I believe it is the way to go as it is possible to get organised when the weather is good and roads are passable I also hope that local businesses might sponsor the provision of salt boxes in other Estates whereby locals can defrost it yourself!” said the County Counillor.
Salt is most effective for melting ice, and does not block gullies like sand and gravel.
