Arguably the most toured production in Irish theatre history, Pan Pan Theatre’s individual take on the enduring myth of Oedipus is finally coming home with a highly–anticipated National tour, which kicks off at Cork’s Granary Theatre on Thursday 4 November and runs for just 3 performances before it continues on to Galway and Limerick.
Oedipus Loves You has been rocking international audiences at performances in twenty two cities across ten different countries, from New York to Berlin to Beijing, Hamburg to Helsinki, London, Sydney, Brisbane, Quebec and Shanghai. Now after several years on the road the show comes home to Ireland.
Commenting on his adventures with the production, Pan Pan Director, Gavin Quinn said: “This show has been a defining production for Pan Pan Theatre internationally. Punk rock sensibility strikes a fierce chord in this wickedly funny and wonderfully theatrical take on the Oedipus plays of Sophocles and Seneca and their legacy, Freudian psychology. The cast of Oedipus Loves You features Cork native Gina Moxley as Jocasta, who audiences will remember from her recent performances with Corcadorca in Woyzeck and MedEia, and Bush Moukarzel who was more recently seen at the Everyman Palace in Druid’s production of The Silver Tassie.
The New York Times championed the show, declaring: “The members of the doomed house of Oedipus have thrown together their own garage band. It’s part of a family therapy project, which they sorely need, and nobody’s quite in control. But, you know, they sound pretty good, especially considering that the lead vocalist has just gouged out his eyes, and the chief backup singer is dead.”
