Cork’s first private hospital for almost 90 years has been officially opened today by the Junior Minister for Trade and Commerce, Billy Kelleher.
The Cork Medical Centre, at City Gate in Mahon, is described by its developers
as the most advanced and best equipped hospital in Ireland.
It boasts 75 single rooms, and a bank of ultra modern operating theatres,
and within it’s first year of operation Sheehan Medical say they will sustain 500 jobs.
However directors of the facility are critical of the fact that it is still not covered by Ireland biggest health insurer – VHI – even though its competitors, Aviva Insurance and Quinn Insurance, are signed up. Sheehan Medical say they negotiating a deal with the VHI to cover its thousands of members for treatment at the the new Cork Medical Centre.
